MEMS Sensor Design Engineer

This person will be responsible for the design and development of MEMS sensor products. This includes the definition of sensor concepts, the development of prototypes, characterization and testing of prototypes, and the analysis of characterization data. In addition to the development of new products, they will also provide design support on existing products. Sensor design entails developing analytical models and performing mechanical finite element analysis on sensor elements and/or sensor systems.

Functions
  • This person will be responsible for the design and development of MEMS sensor products which can span from concept to final product qualification. Their responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
  • Design new MEMS sensors and support existing sensors using analytical models and finite element analysis with Ansys. The majority of these sensors are piezoresistive pressure sensors.
  • Model sensor elements and sensor systems using first principals, equations and simulation tools to improve sensor performance. This may require the development of improved sensor models.
  • Layout MEMS sensor die using standard practices and verification tools.
  • Characterize sensors over voltage, temperature, and pressure. Use device testing to validate designs and models, and to develop specifications.
  • Actively participate in product development process and the transfer of products from R&D into manufacturing and support existing products when necessary.
  • Able to lead the sensor design and testing efforts for a project within a cross-functional team environment
  • Communicate effectively and prepare engineering reports, specifications, and presentations.
Requirements
  • MS or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or Electrical Engineering ideally with a special focus on MEMS.
  • Minimum of 5 years of MEMS and/or sensor experience.
  • MEMS sensor design experience with a preference in the design of piezoresistive pressure sensors.
  • Mechanical modeling using Ansys finite element simulation tools a must.
  • Experience in the layout of MEMS and/or CMOS devices along with using verification tools such as design rule checkers. Mentor graphics is the preferred layout tool.
  • The ability to develop mechanical and electrical analytical models of sensors in MatLab or Mathematica.
  • Hands on experience with electrical test equipment (DMM, power supply, oscilloscopes, parameter analyzer, etc.).
  • The ability to extract sensor performance parameters from test data and use standard statistical data analysis to draw conclusions and make decisions.
  • MEMS or CMOS process knowledge and/or process simulation is a plus.
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) to efficiently work in an interdisciplinary, international project team as well as with customers.
  • Use of standard office tools such as word, excel, and PowerPoint.
