President and CEO
Omar joined SMI in January of 2012 to oversee the research and development of MEMS products and technologies. In July 2013, Omar transitioned from this role to become CEO of the company. Prior to joining SMI, Omar lead the development of next generation automotive passive safety MEMS inertial sensors at Analog Devices. In this role Omar was fundamental in the formation of the product development process and played a pivotal role in creating the strategy for the division. Omar also worked as the lead designer of integrated MEMS capacitive pressure sensors at Schneider Electric including the development of an ultra-low power monolithic sensor for TPMS and low power medical applications. Omar holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley where he conducted research in wireless sensor networks at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center. Omar holds a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Southern California with an emphasis in analog and RF circuit design. Omar is also a graduate of the Harvard Business School PLD program and a Stanford Certified Project Manager.
Chief Operating Officer (COO)
Holger joined SMI in 2007 as a Consultant in Operations, then took over the VP Operations position in 2008 and was promoted to COO in 2011. He is responsible for Production, Process Engineering, IT, Assembly, Test, and Facilities Management. He started at ELMOS in 1995 as a Process Engineer and became Production Engineering Manager in 1997. From 1999 he was responsible for Production, Process Engineering and Equipment Maintenance in the Plasma-Module of the ELMOS fab. In 2003 he began to transfer the 0.8 µm process from the 6-inch fab in Dortmund to the 8-inch line of the joint ELMOS/ Fraunhofer IMS fab in Duisburg and in 2005 became responsible for the complete 8-inch Operations in Duisburg.
Holger holds a diploma in Electrical Engineering from the University of Dortmund (Germany) with a focus on semiconductor manufacturing. His diploma thesis work was carried out at ELMOS in 1994 where he developed a CMOS-compatible process module to produce monolithic integrated piezoresistive pressure sensors in a EU-funded project.
Chief Financial Officer (CFO)
Friedrich Holz joined SMI in 2008 as Director of Finance. He directs the financial affairs of the organization, being responsible for the company’s financial plans and policies. Mr. Holz oversees purchasing, accounting practices, the conduct of its relationships with lending institutions, the financial community, and the preparation of financial reports. With a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from the University of Applied Sciences in Furtwangen/Black Forest, Germany, Friedrich has had over 12 years of financial experience with various organizations in both Controller and Finance Director roles.
David M. Kertes
Vice President of Sales
David Kertes joined SMI in 2013. He manages the Global Sales Team, Customer Service, and Field Sales Engineers. He has been involved in Selling and Marketing sensors (Pressure, Accelerometers, and Position) for over 20 years in various markets (Automotive, Medical, Industrial, Test and Measurement, Aerospace, Defense, Energy, HVAC, and Consumer). He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Marketing at San Jose State University.
Dr. Michael Doelle
Vice President of Marketing
Michael Doelle has been VP of Marketing at SMI since 2013. He is an expert in the field of pressure sensors with more than 10 years of MEMS research and development experience. He is co-author of more than 20 scientific papers and holds several patents.
Michael joined SMI in 2006 as Development Engineer and was elected Director R&D in 2008 with responsibility for the development of SMI’s pressure sensors for automotive, medical, and industrial applications. In 2012 he joined the SMI Sales team and became responsible for the MEMS pressure sensor business in Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Prior to joining SMI, he was a researcher at the Microsystems Materials Laboratory at IMTEK in Freiburg/Germany, where he graduated with a Ph.D., specializing in field effect transistor-based CMOS stress sensors. He studied Microsystems Technology at the University of Freiburg, Germany, and received his engineering degree in 2002.
Sr. Director, Human Resources
Sandy is responsible for leading SMI’s human resources efforts, including: compensation, benefits, staffing, employee relations, training, and compliance. Sandy has an extensive HR background that includes 20+ years of experience in all facets of human resources. Sandy joined SMI in 2007.
Prior to assuming her current role, Sandy held leadership positions in various manufacturing, semiconductor, hard drive, and telecommunication companies. Her experience ranged from start-ups to Fortune 500 companies. Sandy has an MBA from Golden Gate University and a Bachelor’s degree from Union University in Tennessee. She is an active member of numerous professional organizations, including: Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM), Women in Technology International (WITI), Northern California Human Resources Council (NCHRC), Peninsula Compensation Association (PCA), and Bay Area Human Resources Forum (BAHRF).
Director of Quality
Ron joined SMI in June of 2010 with responsibilities of Director of Quality, Reliability and Customer Satisfaction. He has over 20 years of experience in quality leadership and management in the silicon and systems side of the semiconductor industry. Before joining SMI, Ron held Senior Management Quality positions Product Quality and Certifications at Lam Research, Applied Materials and NAVTECH. He has led several TS 16949, ISO 9001 certification projects to successful completion throughout his career. Ron is a Senior Member of the American Society For Quality, Institute of Industrial Engineering, member of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi and an ASQ Certified Quality Manager (CQM). Ron holds a Bachelor of Science in Industrial Technology from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale and an MBA from Santa Clara University.
