IntraSenseTM is an “In Vivo Sensor” which enables measurement of pressure throughout the organ systems (e.g. the cardiovascular or nervous system) and therefore in different fluids (e.g. blood or cerebrospinal fluid). Determining the pressure accurately helps physicians make critical decisions related to diagnosis or treatment. Direct pressure measurement is performed by sensors in minimally invasive medical devices. The pressure sensor is mounted to the tip of a catheter tube, delivering results without a delay in time. SMI’s IntraSenseTM line of products represents an advanced piezoresistive MEMS sensor with wire connection suitable for easy integration into invasive medical equipment.


Summary of Position

The Medical Device Assembly & Test Engineer supports the ramp and on-going production of the IntraSense product line at SMI. He/she will be responsible for optimizing processes for manufacturability, high yield and excellent reliability for the medical market.

As this is a new ramping product line there are exciting opportunities for future growth of the team available. The Engineer will work in collaboration with the Production and R&D team to develop also future high yielding products, optimized for automation and high volume manufacturing. He/she will play an active role in quality improvements in the framework of SMI’s IATF16949 and ISO13485 quality management system.


Essential Functions

  • Automate, control & improve all processes related to IntraSense production
  • Drive definition and buy-off of key capital equipment
  • Establish SPC limits and monitor Cpk values to assure high quality production
  • Discuss visual, mechanical and electrical controls with vendors
  • Participate in the development of process flows in cross functional teams
  • Keep abreast of current technologies / processes and competitor products/developments
  • Trouble shooting of problems in applications and in manufacturing
  • Data analysis as part of Design Verifications and FMEA`s / Risk Analysis
  • Failure Analysis of IntraSense devices
  • Apply the principle of Continuous improvement

Education, Skills and Experience Required

  • Minimum of 3 years of work experience with invasive sensors
  • Experience in mechanical engineering / production of ultra-small silicon, metal, plastic parts
  • Experience in Production environment for manufacturing control / testing
  • Experience in communicating with outside vendors across the globe for manufacturing / testing
  • Knowledge of Medical quality standards and procedures (ISO13485)
  • Knowledge of signal conditioning ASIC`s and calibration algorithms / communication interfaces
  • Experienced with problem solving and good time management skills
  • Knowledge of MS Office (Access, Excel, Word, Power point) and Statistical software tools
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-Starter, self-motivated with the ability to work effectively in a team environment


Additional Desired Skills and Experience

  • 3-5 years of work experience in MEMS/ Semiconductor products for medical components
  • Experience with laser systems and automated optical inspection systems (AOI)
  • Experienced with release of products, procedures, yield management and SPC
  • Experienced with electrical testing and calibration of pressure sensors
  • Knowledge of standard metrology equipment used in semiconductor/MEMS fabrication
  • Knowledge of ISO9001 or TS16949 quality systems
